Featuring Lea DeLaria

Wind down at the end of the working week and experience some great music and performance with Lea DeLaria.

‘DeLaria has gone out of her way to reproduce a classic, close-miked 1950s sound... and it works.’  Jazzwise

‘You’ll be presented with a faultless demonstration of jazz vocal delivery’  BBC Music Magazine

Lea has distinguished herself in every form of entertainment that she touches. The ‘famously controversial’ DeLaria is a major figure in the world of lesbian stand-up comedy, noted for her raunchy persona and inflammatory, irreverent political commentary. She has led a fascinating, varied and unpredictable career which has taken her from the comedy clubs of downtown New York to centre stage on Broadway and the silver screens of Hollywood. She also happens to be one of the world’s greatest jazz singers and has garnered widespread critical acclaim for her inspiring live performances.

DeLaria, who likes to describe herself as ‘a chick singer with balls’, has spent her career challenging notions of what a jazz singer should be and is noted for her vibrant, compelling style which harks back to the golden age of jazz vocalists.

For this performance, in which DeLaria is joined by stellar pianist Janette Mason, bassist Simon Little and drummer Mark Fletcher, the band will perform material from DeLaria’s critically-acclaimed live Smoke Sessions album.

When watching her perform it is plain to see why the New York Times describes her as ‘Every inch a star.’
